Apollo 13 took pictures of the far side of the moon, capturing an image of Tsiolovsky crater.

NAVIGATING

Mission Control told Lovell he would have to fire the engines again after the spacecraft rounded the moon. Apollo 13 didn’t drive itself. Lovell, as pilot, had to determine the exact right course.

Normally, he would have used the stars the way sailors used to do at sea. A computer would then help him line up the course. But he couldn’t find a real star to use. Debris from the explosion glinted in the sun like stars. Lovell called them “false stars.” Finally, Dorothy Johnson, an expert at Mission Control, suggested using the sun as a guide. It worked. Lovell set his course relying on the sun.

Two hours after rounding the moon, NASA asked Lovell to fire the engines again. This burn lasted five minutes and reduced the time needed to get home.
